Nonviolence Guidelines
A core principle behind all Indivisible Tri-Cities events is a commitment to nonviolent action and no civil disobedience.
We expect all participants to seek to de-escalate any potential confrontation with those who disagree with our values, and to act lawfully at all events. Weapons, including those legally permitted, should not be brought to events. All events are held in public spaces or on public property.
Those participating or attending our events agree to the following in our defense of democracy:
-
At all times, we will use our emotions as a positive, nonviolent force for change. We will be open and respect those we encounter, even if we disagree.
-
We will refuse to return the assaults—verbal or physical—of those who oppose or disagree with us.
-
We will protect those who oppose us from insults and attacks, and seek to de-escalate any encounters or ask for help from Indivisible Tri-Cities volunteers.
-
As participants in nonviolent events, we will follow the directions of designated coordinators. In case of serious disagreements, we will remove ourselves from the gatherings.
-
We will refrain from insults and swearing, and will not use violence—verbal or physical—toward any person.
-
We will not carry any weapons.
-
We will not use threatening motions, damage property, or bring/use alcohol or illegal drugs.
-
We will seek to de-escalate situations or ask for help, if needed, from Indivisible Tri-Cities volunteers, including the de-escalation team. These volunteers will be wearing yellow neon vests and name tags. The Leadership team will be wearing red Indivisible Tri-Cities STAFF shirts and name tags.
